Our team has recently attended the third anniversary of the Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida, which is the pet industry's premier event featuring the newest and most innovative pet products. The event was presented by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) and Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA) and featured over 1000 exhibitors and 1000 new product launches. Here are the most important highlights!

This year, Pride+Groom showcased our NEW Leave-In Conditioner with a live demonstration at our booth featuring lead groomer, Kasey King from Pet Supplies Plus. The annual expo was the perfect forum for launching our new product. Order it here

Pet industry trends

According to the APPA, there was a 10.8% increase in total sales, with the highest spend category being pet foods and treats at $58.1 billion. The second highest spend category was vet care with product sales at $35.9 billion.

Our team observed some of the biggest trends at the expo, including:

  • the rise of women-owned companies,
  • a growth in innovation and products for cats,
  • new forms of sustainable non-animal protein companies,
  • and an increase in environmentally friendly food, toys, and pet accessories.

These trends are important for dog owners and lovers to be aware of when looking for the best products for their furry friends, so you can definitely get exited for new pet products this year!

Female-owned pet businesses at Global Pet Expo 2023

Global Pet Expo

At the Global Pet Expo presented by the American Pet Products Association and the Pet Industry Distributors Association, we spotted a lot female-owned pet businesses

Among the standout women-owned pet companies were Fera Pet Organics, K9 Granola Factory, and fabdog, all of which showcased unique and innovative products.

  • Fera Pet Organics, founded by Dr. Michelle Dulake and Emily Hsu, offers pet supplements that combine Eastern and Western therapies for optimal results.

  •  K9 Granola Factory, owned by Janie Smyser, produces nutrient-rich dog treats made by local people, including beautiful dog donuts that look good enough for humans.

  • Fabdog, started by founder and designer Cassie Cole, brings human-style fashion to the canine world with high-quality fabrics and craftsmanship.

Rising popularity of cats

The New Products Showcase at the Global Pet Expo featured a growing cat industry, with a doubled section showcasing new and innovative products. Winners of the showcase included Wigglin Snake Cat Toy, Lickimat cat riser from Australia, Made by Nacho cat food crafted by chef Bobby Flay and his daughter, and Kitty-Med Check by Pet Joa, a revolutionary cat litter supplement hat helps monitor cat health.

Among Pride+Groom products, we have already variety of products suitable for cat, including Mane Tame waterless shampoo for cats, Swipes wet cat wipes, The Balm paw balm, and Proud Signature scent for cats. Should we go down the cat road?

New protein source for your pups!

Yora, Percuro, Open Farm and Catit are among the pet food innovators and professionals who are sourcing alternative protein sources for pet foods to address sustainability and supply chain shortages. These protein alternatives are proving to be nutritionally comparable to farm-raised animal proteins, and are gaining popularity among pet owners who are increasingly concerned about the environment and their pet's health. Some of the protein sources include Yak, crickets, mealworms, and upcycled produce. Insects and upcycling are becoming particularly popular as sustainable options for protein for pets.

Environmental concerns in pet industry

The pet industry is also embracing environmentally friendly initiatives, with packaging and ingredients being the primary focus. Shameless Pets, for example, is a treat manufacturer that uses upcycled produce in their pet treats, saving over 1 million pounds of food waste to date.

We at PRIDE+GROOM are also proud of post-recycled plastic usage in our packaging and promoting eco-friendly items such as reusable towels and bamboo bath brushes.

Overall, the Global Pet Expo showcased a variety of ways in which the pet industry is addressing sustainability and environmental concerns. As a dog owner and lover, it's important to stay up-to-date on these trends to ensure that our furry friends are not only healthy but also benefiting the planet.

WHO IS PRIDE+GROOM?

PRIDE+GROOM was born because 4 New York City dog lovers wanted the same level of grooming products for their dogs that they themselves enjoyed. They looked (hard) but nothing was up to snuff. Or sniff. Like so many, we love our families and take pride in our homes, and we consider our pets to be integral parts of those entities. That said, we could not find an effective way to coif them that was on par with the way we tended to our children, our homes, or ourselves. These beloved pets are allowed on the furniture and in our beds, and yet even when fresh from the groomer, we knew they did not smell or feel as good as they could.

With the development of our coat-specific shampoos, conditioner and deodorizing spray, we think we found just the way to say thanks for being the best and the sweetest MVP of the house.

PRIDE+GROOM is the first dog grooming brand launched under a beauty platform, with formulas made in a clean beauty and scent lab. We know beauty is not only skin deep. We did a ton of research to create the entire line. Each product is formulated with its own unique blend of essential oils sourced from around the world.
